Learn

Learning at Ava Torah Judaism

Learning is at the heart of Ava Torah Judaism.

We approach Torah as a living inheritance, studied through careful reading, discussion, and shared responsibility. Our learning is rooted in traditional Jewish sources and carried out with humility, patience, and respect for the depth of the tradition.

How We Study

Our learning follows the classical Jewish approach to study: engaging texts closely, asking honest questions, and learning in relationship with others.

We value:

Careful engagement with Torah and classical sources

Questions that deepen understanding rather than simplify it

Learning that shapes character and responsibility, not just knowledge

Study may take place in person or online, in groups or one-on-one, depending on context and need.

Our Teachings

The teachings below reflect ongoing study within our community. They are offered as learning resources for those who wish to engage Torah thoughtfully and at a measured pace. Each series includes a place to begin and an invitation to continue learning over time.

Daf Yomi is a steady, page-by-page journey through the Talmud, following the traditional daily cycle of study. This learning emphasizes continuity, careful reading, and building familiarity with the language and structure of the text over time. Sessions are designed to be accessible while remaining faithful to the depth and complexity of the material.

Ein Yaakov focuses on the aggadic teachings of the Talmud, drawing out moral insight, meaning, and tradition through narrative and reflection. This learning invites thoughtful engagement with stories, teachings, and values that shape Jewish thought and character, often raising questions rather than offering simple conclusions.

This learning follows the Rambam’s Mishneh Torah, a systematic presentation of Jewish law and practice. Study emphasizes clarity, structure, and understanding how individual laws fit into a coherent whole. Sessions aim to make complex material approachable while preserving the Rambam’s precision and depth.

This series focuses on learning the daily prayers through listening and repetition, with an emphasis on Shacharit. It includes recordings of the prayers as they are traditionally recited, alongside guidance on the structure of the siddur and the flow of the service. The approach is practical and unhurried, helping learners become familiar with both the words and the rhythm of communal prayer, without pressure or assumptions about prior experience.

Based on the teachings of the Chofetz Chaim, this series explores the ethical and spiritual dimensions of speech. Study focuses on awareness, restraint, and responsibility in daily communication, examining how words shape relationships, community, and personal character. The emphasis is on reflection and gradual growth rather than self-judgment.

Based on the work of Rabbi Moshe Cordovero, Tomer Devorah focuses on mussar and character refinement through the lens of the Divine attributes. Learning centers on humility, compassion, self-examination, and ethical growth, approached as a lifelong practice rather than a checklist of behaviors.

Class times and details are can be found on the community calendar.
